OpenAI’s Sora App Sees Post-Launch Slowdown as Downloads and Spending Decline

OpenAI’s video-generation app Sora is showing signs of decelerating momentum following a rapid rise at launch, according to new market data. After debuting in October and quickly reaching the top of the U.S. App Store, the app has experienced consecutive monthly declines in both downloads and consumer spending as early enthusiasm fades.

Data from Appfigures indicates Sora’s downloads fell 32% month over month in December and a further 45% in January, while consumer spending dropped 32% over the same period. The slowdown comes despite a strong initial performance powered by OpenAI’s Sora 2 video model, which helped the invite-only iOS app surpass one million installs faster than ChatGPT. OpenAI has not commented on the latest figures, as Sora continues to compete in the emerging market for AI-generated social video.
