Flapping Airplanes Launches Research-First AI Lab With $180M Seed Round

Flapping Airplanes announced its public launch with $180 million in seed funding to pursue a research-driven approach to artificial intelligence that prioritizes fundamental breakthroughs over brute-force scaling. The round was backed by Google Ventures, Sequoia, and Index.

The lab is focused on developing large models that require significantly less data and compute, positioning itself as a counterpoint to the dominant scale-at-all-costs strategy in the AI industry. Sequoia partner David Cahn has described the effort as part of a broader shift toward long-horizon research, arguing that a small number of core scientific advances could unlock major progress toward advanced intelligence.

With substantial capital and a research-first mandate, Flapping Airplanes aims to expand the search space for AI progress beyond infrastructure-heavy approaches.
