OpenAI Begins Testing Ads in ChatGPT for Free and Go Users in the U.S.

OpenAI announced it has started testing advertising within ChatGPT for users in the United States on its Free and Go subscription tiers, including the recently launched $8-per-month Go plan introduced globally in January. Paid plans — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education — will remain ad-free.

The company said advertisements will be clearly labeled, separated from responses, and will not influence ChatGPT outputs or share user conversations with advertisers. Ads may be matched to conversation topics or prior interactions, with users able to manage personalization settings or dismiss ads entirely.

The announcement follows public criticism from rival Anthropic and comments from CEO Sam Altman defending the approach as a way to support broader access to AI tools while maintaining user trust.
