Anthropic is facing a trademark dispute in India after local firm Anthropic Software filed a complaint in a Karnataka commercial court claiming prior use of the “Anthropic” name since 2017. The filing follows the AI company’s expansion into India, including the opening of a local office and the appointment of Irina Ghose to lead regional operations.
Founder Mohammad Ayyaz Mulla said the complaint seeks recognition of prior use and damages of ₹10 million, citing customer confusion. A January court order issued notice to Anthropic but declined interim relief.
The dispute comes as India becomes a strategic AI market ahead of the New Delhi AI Impact Summit, where Dario Amodei will appear alongside Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and Sundar Pichai
