OpenAI Reorganizes Mission Alignment Team and Appoints Chief Futurist

OpenAI has disbanded its Mission Alignment team, a group created in 2024 to help communicate the company’s artificial intelligence mission to employees and the public. The organization confirmed that team members have been reassigned to other roles across the company as part of an internal restructuring.

Former team leader Josh Achiam has transitioned into a new position as Chief Futurist, where he will focus on studying how artificial intelligence, including AGI, may shape society and the long-term future. In this role, Achiam is expected to collaborate with OpenAI physicist Jason Pruet on research and strategic thinking related to AI’s broader impact.

The restructuring follows earlier organizational changes at OpenAI, including the 2024 disbanding of its Superalignmentresearch group, reflecting the company’s evolving approach to AI governance and mission-focused initiatives.
