Pentagon Moves to Replace Anthropic AI as Defense Shifts Toward Multi-Model Strategy

The U.S. Department of Defense is accelerating efforts to replace Anthropic’s artificial intelligence systems following a breakdown in its $200 million contract, according to comments from Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and AI Officer. He indicated that the department is actively engineering and deploying multiple large language models within government-controlled environments, with operational availability expected in the near term.

The split stems from disagreements over usage restrictions, as Anthropic sought limits on applications such as mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, which the Pentagon declined to accept. In response, the Department of Defense has expanded partnerships with OpenAI and xAI to support classified AI deployments.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has since designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk, signaling a decisive shift away from the company as it challenges the classification in court.
