Patreon CEO Calls for Creator Compensation in AI Model Training Debate

Patreon CEO Jack Conte has outlined a firm position on artificial intelligence, stating that while he supports technological progress, AI companies should compensate creators whose work is used to train models. Speaking at SXSW, he positioned AI as part of a broader cycle of digital disruption while emphasizing the need to protect creative economies.

Conte highlighted concerns over the use of creator content under “fair use,” arguing that AI firms simultaneously enter paid agreements with major rights holders while not compensating individual creators. He indicated that this imbalance raises questions about how value is distributed as AI systems generate significant commercial returns.

While acknowledging the inevitability of AI-driven change, Jack Conte stressed that future AI development should include mechanisms that support and sustain artists and creative communities.
