Today, Samsung Electronics unveiled a pioneering generative artificial intelligence model, indicating an imminent integration with its range of devices. This move places Samsung at the forefront of embedding advanced AI directly into consumer technology. Generative AI, now a hotbed of competition among tech behemoths following the public embrace of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, operates on expansive language models trained on vast datasets.
Samsung’s innovation, named Samsung Gauss after “the legendary mathematician who established normal distribution theory, the backbone of machine learning and AI,” the company said in a statement, is tailor-made for AI-powered functionalities in consumer electronics. Among its capabilities, Samsung Gauss Language offers assistance in drafting emails, translating texts, and allowing for more intelligent device management. Additionally, it empowers software developers to expedite code writing, while Samsung Gauss Image offers image creation and modification services. Daniel Araujo, Samsung’s vice president of mobile business, suggested in the company’s recent earnings call that this generative AI technology could reach consumers by next year, potentially making Samsung one of the initial phone manufacturers to do so.
“Samsung Gauss is currently used on employee productivity but will be expanded to a variety of Samsung product applications to provide new user experience in the near future,” Samsung said in a press release on Wednesday during the second day of the Samsung AI Forum 2023.
Apple, in contrast, remains silent on its developments in generative AI. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, acknowledged ongoing work in this area but refrained from sharing specifics during their earnings call.
The competition in AI between Samsung and Apple is just the latest chapter in a long-standing rivalry in the mobile device market. Historically, Samsung and Apple have been locked in a battle for dominance, with both companies regularly leapfrogging each other with innovations and improvements. Apple’s sleek design and user-friendly ecosystem have often been juxtaposed with Samsung’s emphasis on technical prowess and feature-rich devices. As Samsung pushes forward with Gauss, all eyes will be on Apple’s response in this next era of AI-enhanced devices.
