Separate But Equal? Hoffman & His AI Twin Assess the Risks

When Reid Hoffman joined the Bloomberg Technology stage alongside his AI-generated “twin” Reid AI, it marked a candid evaluation of the potential — and pitfalls — of this burgeoning technology.

Previous AI Insider coverage documented realistic AI renderings of celebrities like the actors Tom Hanks and Stephen Fry, along with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But Hoffman’s live interaction with his virtual doppelganger provided a striking demo.

Hoffman acknowledged the strangeness, admitting: “I’ve literally had friends of mine go, ‘Oh my God, I’m so creeped out’ after watching it.” However, he framed it as a vital exercise: “Part of that was to say, look, this is part of the future and part of what we can be doing and how do we navigate that.”

On the ethics of AI impersonations, Hoffman’s AI copy struck a balanced tone.

“Think of me as Reid’s twin, reflecting his thoughts through artificial intelligence,” he said. “I’m not a deepfake. My role is transparent and constructive.”

When asked why he created Reid AI, the virtual version responded in Pig Latin.

The real Hoffman elaborated on the thorny topic of deepfakes and disinformation campaigns: “I strongly hope [this technology] is not the beginning of the end of truth as we know it. I think there will be a set of things, whether it be watermarking digital certificates or trusted sources.”

He warned that malicious actors could falsely label real information as deepfakes, creating a “language of non-truth” — one of his biggest concerns around AI’s role in the upcoming elections.

However, Hoffman maintained his signature optimism about harnessing AI’s potential.

“You’ll see something like an amazing future where we can build a medical assistant on every smartphone better than the average GP, a tutor on every smartphone for every age,” he remarked.

Observing the boundary-pushing AI demo, Hoffman positioned it as emblematic of the innovator’s mindset: “Let’s flip every script in our lives from a threat to a trophy.”

While surely unnerving for some, Hoffman views AI-generated interlocutors like his “twin” as a wake-up call to collectively navigate AI’s responsible development. Embracing the technology thoughtfully, he argues, unlocks incredible beneficial possibilities.

“We have to drive into the future and navigate around the potholes,” Hoffman declared, “but keep driving, don’t stop.”

This bold approach aims to prevent AI’s existential promise from being undermined by its potential perils — catalyzing desperately needed dialogue on truth, trust and human flourishing in the algorithmic age.
