Robot Software Innovator Physical Intelligence Secures $400M from Bezos, OpenAI at $2B Valuation

Physical Intelligence, a robotics software startup, announced it has secured $400 million in early-stage funding led by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, with participation from OpenAI and venture capital firms Thrive Capital and Lux Capital. The latest funding round, completed at a valuation of $2 billion, underscores growing investor interest in advancing robotics capabilities through general-purpose AI-driven software, as reported by PitchBook.

The startup is focused on developing foundational software that can operate across various types of robots, streamlining the robotics industry by removing the need for customized software for each robotic function. Physical Intelligence’s goal is to provide a flexible and universal solution, compatible with multiple robotic systems and applications.

Venture capital investment in AI and cloud technology remains high, with industry leaders such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon, and Nvidia collectively pouring billions into AI initiatives. According to data from Accel, funding for AI and cloud-focused companies in the U.S., Europe, and Israel is anticipated to reach $79.2 billion by the end of 2024. This surge in investment has spurred interest in robotics, with several startups, such as Vicarious — acquired by Alphabet-owned Intrinsic in 2022 — along with Universal Robots, Seegrid, and Covariant, pushing forward in the sector.

Physical Intelligence’s latest breakthrough, demonstrated in a recently published paper, highlights its software π0, or pi-zero, which enables robots to perform various tasks with dexterity, such as folding laundry, bagging groceries, and retrieving toast from a toaster.
