IBM and L’Oréal, the global beauty leader, have announced an innovative collaboration to leverage IBM’s generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology for sustainable advancements in cosmetic formulation. This groundbreaking partnership aims to create an AI foundation model tailored to L’Oréal’s Research & Innovation needs, optimizing the use of sustainable raw materials while reducing energy and material waste.

The bespoke AI model, the first of its kind in the industry, is set to enhance L’Oréal’s capabilities in developing high-performance, sustainable products across all cosmetic categories. IBM’s state-of-the-art AI technologies will help L’Oréal extract actionable insights from extensive formulation data, paving the way for eco-conscious and innovative solutions.

“This collaboration is a truly impactful application of generative AI, leveraging the power of technology and expertise for the good of the planet,” stated Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow, Vice President Europe and Africa and Director IBM Research Zurich.

Over the next several years, IBM Consulting will assist L’Oréal’s 4,000 researchers in rethinking formulation processes. By prioritizing renewable ingredients and innovative AI-driven methods, the alliance aims to align with L’Oréal’s “L’Oréal for the Future” sustainability goals.
