Google is offering free access to its most powerful artificial intelligence tools and training programs to college students worldwide, pledging $1 billion over three years to support AI education, job raining and research in the U.S.

In a blog post published by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, the company unveiled its latest education initiative that includes a 12-month free subscription to its “AI Pro” plan for eligible college students 18 and older in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. The offer includes advanced access to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model and a new “Guided Learning” feature designed to deepen student understanding through interactive tutoring. Additional countries are expected to follow.

Pichai noted that providing the “best technologies to every student has always been core to Google’s mission” and noted its Chromebooks for every classroom initiative and work with LearnLM.

“It’s also deeply important to me,” Pichai wrote. “Having regular access to computers in grad school changed my life, and led me on the path to Google. It’s my hope that bringing the best AI tools to college students will open up new worlds for them, too.”

At the core of the student offer is access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s most capable generative model. Students can use it to write essays, solve math problems, analyze arguments, generate videos from text using Veo 3, and run advanced coding tasks using Jules, a virtual coding assistant. The AI Pro plan also includes 2 terabytes of cloud storage and tools like NotebookLM, an AI assistant for organizing thoughts and research.

The highlight of the rollout is Guided Learning, a new feature within Gemini that acts like an interactive tutor. Instead of simply delivering answers, the tool prompts students with follow-up questions and step-by-step guidance. Google says it collaborated with educators, students, and researchers to ensure the feature supports critical thinking and deeper comprehension.

“We’re also announcing the Google AI for Education Accelerator, an initiative to offer free AI training and Google Career Certificates to every college student in America,” Pichai noted. “Over 100 public universities, including the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, the University of Virginia and the University Systems in Texas, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania have already signed up.”

Pinchai pointed out this initiative already has a foundation with the company’s Gemini for Education program and Google Workspace for Education, which also gives access to school-focues AI tools. The company reports that over 80% of the top 100 U.S. universities use Google Workspace for Education.

Pichai said these students are the first “AI natives” and will use and influence AI in ways not imagined.

“Getting our most powerful technology into students’ hands — while supporting them with training and infrastructure — is how they’ll shape the AI platform shift and make sure it benefits everyone,” he wrote.
