OpenAI Begins Advertising Rollout in ChatGPT as It Tests New Revenue Model

OpenAI has started introducing advertisements to users on the free and Go tiers of ChatGPT, initially launching the feature in the United States as part of a gradual rollout. Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap indicated the company is taking an iterative approach, prioritizing user trust, privacy protections, and overall product experience as it evaluates how ads can be integrated into AI services.

The move comes as OpenAI explores sustainable monetization while maintaining broad access to its tools. Reports indicate premium advertising pricing and early participation from major brands through Shopify’s Shop Campaigns network, including retailers such as Target, Williams Sonoma, and Adobe. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman also emphasized the company’s commitment to free access to AI, positioning the ad-supported tier as a way to expand availability while supporting continued platform growth.
