AI Safety Summit 2023: A Glimpse into the Event on 1–2 November at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire

The UK Government has announced the first-ever global AI Safety Summit to be held at the renowned Bletchley Park. The summit will gather AI firms, digital ministers, civil society members, and specialists to discuss the potential risks and rewards of frontier AI, the latest AI models which could be hazardous if not developed with caution.

The summit’s objective is to understand the challenges posed by the rapid progression of AI while also spotlighting its transformative potential, particularly in the realms of education and global research collaborations.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan will spearhead the summit, underscoring the government’s stance that the evolution of AI must prioritize safety and security.

The morning sessions will deep dive into the potential risks of frontier AI. Discussions will touch upon national security threats, potential election interference, the decline of societal trust, and the deepening of global disparities.

In the afternoon, roundtable sessions will concentrate on refining strategies for responsible frontier AI safety. Topics will encompass determining risk boundaries, crafting effective safety evaluations, and instituting strong governance frameworks to facilitate safe frontier AI expansion by creators.

A recurring theme will be the importance of global collaboration, accentuating the necessity for policymakers, scientists, and experts to collaboratively address risks and tap into AI’s potential for worldwide economic and societal progress.

The summit will wrap up with a panel spotlighting how AI can serve the common good, especially in transforming education. Donelan will conclude with remarks emphasizing the critical role of international teamwork in safe AI adoption.

The intention behind this summit is to catalyze international teamwork in the ethical creation and implementation of AI. The UK Government aspires to be at the forefront of this dialogue, championing a secure and optimistic AI-driven future.
