MI5 Chief Warns Thousands of UK Businesses Vulnerable to Chinese AI Threats

In a recent interview with Sky News during the Emerging Technology and Securing Innovation Security Summit in Silicon Valley, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum highlighted the increasing attempts, primarily by China, to “steal competitive advantage” from the UK. Emphasizing the transformative potential of emerging technologies like AI, McCallum stressed the urgency for companies to recognize and address these threats promptly.

Authoritarian States

“Authoritarian states know that and are seeking to win the race to acquire as much advantage as they can in the growth of those exciting technologies,” said McCallum. “Authoritarian states know that and are seeking to win the race to acquire as much advantage as they can in the growth of those exciting technologies. The states that lead the way in these technologies will wield immense power.”

Since taking the helm of Britain’s domestic security agency in 2020, McCallum has actively engaged with high-risk companies in the UK, especially those linked to critical infrastructure.

During the summit in Silicon Valley, McCallum spoke to Sky News and stated: “Right now emerging technology is coming through — AI is the most obvious example — which is capable of changing our world at a pretty fundamental level. And I would like for the citizens of the western democratic nations to be the beneficiaries of the outcome of that race, rather than to have that power in the hands of states who do not share our values. Bringing business leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics face-to-face with the top security chiefs from five nations.”

McCallum also said: “The UK is seeing a sharp rise in aggressive attempts by other states to steal competitive advantage. It’s the same across all five of our countries.”

Escalating Threats

With the escalating threats, McCallum aims to expand MI5’s outreach, targeting a wider range of companies, many of which might be unaware of their vulnerability.

McCallum said he now hoped to use this unprecedented public-facing initiative to reach 10 times as many companies, including many which would not realize they could be at risk.

At the summit, he collaborated with representatives from the Five Eyes intelligence partnership, including FBI Director Christopher Wray, to raise awareness among businesses of varying sizes about the predominant risks stemming from China.

“I’m deliberately talking in terms of authoritarian states,” said McCallum. “We do see hostile activity coming from Putin’s Kremlin, from the Iranian regime, and potentially, at times, others also.” Before adding: It’s not all about China, but when it comes to emerging technology, their most important set of risks are coming from the Chinese government. Yes. We all need to be aware, and respond, before it’s too late.”
