Zachary Lipton, Assistant Professor of ML at Carnegie Mellon & CTO of Abridge Talks about The Potential Risks Posed by AI in “Bloomberg Technology” Interview

In a recent interview with “Bloomberg Technology”, Zachary Lipton, Assistant Professor of Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon and CTO of Abridge, talked about the growing prominence of generative AI and its associated risks, particularly in light of Sam Altman stepping down from OpenAI and then being reinstated.

Lipton shared his perspective on generative AI, highlighting two main viewpoints within the field. Firstly, he acknowledges the immediate, real-world concerns related to AI systems used in businesses today. He emphasized the importance of addressing issues like privacy, accountability, transparency, and liability, especially as AI leads to increased automation in decision-making processes.

“I think it’s important to draw a big distinction. There’s a contingent of this community that is more focused on the idea of AI as a potential existential risk to humanity. And there’s a bunch of us who are more a group of social scientists, ethicists some maybe socially inclined computer scientists who’ve looked at these problems from different angles on the near-term terrestrial actual harm of AI systems.”

On the other hand, Lipton noted a group focused on existential risks, likening the potential impact of AI to epoch-changing events similar to nuclear weapons. This group, influenced by the Effective Altruism movement, prioritizes the remote possibility of AI posing a catastrophic risk to humanity, considering it the most important issue globally, despite its fringe status among technologists and business professionals.

Lipton positions his work more towards addressing near-term issues of AI but acknowledges that this existentialist viewpoint, though relatively rare, has significant backing and influence in certain circles, particularly in San Francisco and research labs like OpenAI.
