Recognized globally for its technological advancements, Singapore is charging ahead in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The country, known as a hub for the Asian headquarters of major tech companies like Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Microsoft, is embarking on a bold initiative as part of its national AI strategy. This ambitious plan, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, aims to expand the nation’s AI expertise by tripling its talent pool to 15,000 professionals. This growth will encompass a wide range of specialists, from machine-learning scientists to engineers.
In a recent move to bolster this initiative, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore declared a substantial investment of $52.3 million (70 million SGD). This funding is dedicated to creating Southeast Asia’s first comprehensive large language model, designed to cater to the diverse linguistic needs of the region.
Singapore’s commitment to AI doesn’t stop at talent development. The country is also focusing on enhancing its high-performance computing capabilities. This effort involves forming strategic partnerships with leading chipmakers and cloud service providers. Such collaborations are crucial for providing the necessary infrastructure to support the growing AI sector.
The government’s strategy includes incentivizing the AI industry further. Plans are in place to support AI startups through accelerator programs and to encourage the establishment of AI “centers of excellence” by various companies. Moreover, Singapore’s contribution to the global AI landscape is already significant, with Nvidia reporting $2.7 billion in revenue from Singapore in its recent quarterly filing, trailing only behind the U.S., China, and Taiwan.
Singapore is not solely relying on attracting global talent; there is a strong focus on nurturing local expertise as well. The government is set to enhance local AI training programs and ensure the availability of essential resources like graphics processing units (GPUs) for the country’s researchers. This comprehensive approach signifies Singapore’s determination to be at the forefront of AI technology, positioning itself as a key player in the global tech industry.
