PC Keyboards to Feature New AI Button, a First in Microsoft’s 30-Year Design History

Microsoft is taking a significant step in integrating AI into personal computing by introducing a new keyboard key dedicated to Windows Copilot, marking a notable change in its keyboard design for the first time in nearly three decades. This update — published today in a company blog post — allows users to access Copilot by pressing the new key, enabling searches for web content, personal content, and general PC features using the app’s generative AI capabilities. The feature aims to make Copilot a readily accessible smart assistant.

The introduction of the Copilot key on Microsoft’s laptops and desktop keyboards, starting in February, is part of a broader strategy by Microsoft to emphasize the importance of generative AI in the future of computing. This strategy is evident in the company’s numerous AI-related announcements throughout 2023, including the launch of its Bing chatbot, Edge browser, and Copilot for Microsoft 365. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has highlighted AI’s potential impact across the company’s various sectors.

While Microsoft hasn’t specified any initial partners for the Copilot key’s launch, the anticipation is building for upcoming announcements from hardware manufacturers. These new devices will be showcased at CES 2024, beginning January 9th.

The push for AI integration extends beyond Microsoft, with semiconductor giants like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm each introducing AI PC chips with dedicated neural processors designed for running generative AI applications. However, the full potential of these chips in consumer applications remains uncertain, as the industry is still exploring the types of applications that can effectively utilize neural processors.

The PC market, which saw a significant increase in sales at the start of the pandemic, is poised for another surge as older systems are replaced with newer models. This renewal cycle is expected to boost not only the adoption of AI-enabled PCs but also the financial performance of companies like Microsoft, Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.
