Square Enix, renowned for its significant contributions to the gaming industry, has recently announced a strategic shift towards integrating generative AI into its internal game development processes. This move reflects the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the gaming world.
This initiative was highlighted in the company’s annual New Year’s Letter, traditionally a platform for outlining the organization’s future direction. The 2024 letter, authored by Takashi Kiryu, marks his first since assuming the role of president. Kiryu succeeded Yosuke Matsuda, who concluded a decade-long presidency.
In his letter, Kiryu acknowledged the growing potential of artificial intelligence, a topic that has gained traction in recent years. The rise of technologies like ChatGPT in the previous year has underscored the broad applicability of generative AI, extending well beyond text generation. Kiryu’s observation represents a notable shift from the focus of his predecessor, Matsuda, who had emphasized blockchain technology and the prospects of Web 3.0 games in his last two New Year’s letters.
“I believe that generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we create, but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming,” he said. “We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions.”
Kiryu also added that their short-term goal is to enhance development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in marketing efforts. In the longer term, the company aims to leverage these technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as they believe that technological innovation represents significant business opportunities.
However, Kiryu did not entirely depart from Matsuda’s vision. He identified blockchain as one of the three key investment areas for Square Enix, alongside AI and cloud computing. This indicates a balanced approach to innovation, blending new opportunities with ongoing projects.
Furthermore, Kiryu revealed that Square Enix had redefined its overarching mission and goals in 2022 to better align with these three technological fields. As part of this realignment, the company is currently modifying its organizational structure to effectively support these strategic efforts. This restructuring is indicative of Square Enix’s commitment to not only embracing AI in game development but also ensuring that the organization is optimally positioned to leverage these technologies for future growth and innovation.
