Elizabeth Adams Advocating for Inclusive AI

In a powerful speech at TEDxSavannah, Elizabeth M. Adams, a renowned AI ethics leader, issued a resounding call for responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing from her personal experiences and expertise, Adams focused on the pressing need to mitigate AI bias and foster a more equitable future.

“I use AI in my business to help streamline tasks,” said Adams, exemplifying the ubiquity of AI in our daily lives. However, she cautioned: “Sometimes this data can be flawed, skewed, biased or exclude the experiences of entire groups of people, and this leads to a troubling reality: AI bias.”

Recounting her experience with an AI image generation system, Adams revealed a disturbing case of bias.

“The images that were returned of the back view of the African American cowgirl were inappropriately sexualized, not at all what I intended,” she stated, which raises concerns about the data used to train such systems.

Adams’ commitment to responsible AI stems from her doctoral research, where she examines “broader stakeholder engagement in the policies and procedures that build artificial intelligence.” She passionately believes: “I want to know if this might enhance the systems’ inclusivity, transparency, trustworthiness, and fairness.”

To combat AI bias and promote inclusivity, Adams introduced a powerful acronym: ACT. “Accountable, we need to hold AI developers accountable for how their systems and their services perform,” she urged. “Connections, building connections beyond our office walls is so important because when we build connections with diverse colleagues and diverse communities, we begin to develop healthy and appropriate narratives.”

Concluding her address, Adams issued a rallying cry: “I believe in responsible AI because I know that it can help safeguard us against unintended consequences that can cause harm. So as we stand on the brink of this new era where artificial intelligence is entwined in our lives, let us pledge to steer this powerful technology with care.”

Adams’ impassioned speech resonated with the urgency of fostering responsible and inclusive AI. By holding developers accountable, building connections with diverse communities, and cultivating trust, we can collectively shape a future where AI serves and empowers all members of society.
