In an interview earlier this year, Dr. Adele Merritt, Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, discussed the strategic role AI is playing in the newly released IT roadmap for the intelligence community, which outlines goals to improve cybersecurity, cloud computing and data analysis.
Merritt expressed enthusiasm about AI’s potential, noting: “There’s so much more on the horizon that we can do with large language models and generative AI.” She pointed out that while AI has been evolving for years, recent advances have brought its capabilities into the mainstream, impacting everything from national security to daily life.
For the intelligence community, AI is not just a tool; it’s a strategic asset.
“We need to make investments right now in our infrastructure to realize how to keep all that data, make it accessible, and move it around the world,” Merritt explained. The roadmap is designed to ensure that these technological advancements are harnessed effectively, guiding long-term decisions for AI integration and growth.
However, with these opportunities come challenges. Merritt is keenly aware of the ethical considerations surrounding AI.
“We need to make sure we are doing this in a way that aligns with our values, our ethics, what we hold dear,” she remarked. Her team is working closely with civil liberties and privacy officers to create the guardrails necessary for AI deployment.
The intelligence community is also focused on staying ahead of adversaries who are using AI for malicious purposes.
“Adversaries are trying to use AI to write malicious code or to fuel their phishing campaigns,” Merritt warned. She underscored that the U.S. must remain vigilant, using AI to “increase our ability to discover anomalous behavior” and protect critical networks from cyber threats.
