How AI Shapes Our Realities: Insights from Yuval Noah Harari on Democracy, Misinformation & Control

Recently, historian and philosopher Yuval Noah Harari shared his views on the transformative and often disruptive power of artificial intelligence (AI) with Larry Wilmore, a comedian, writer, producer, and cultural commentator. As AI continues to infiltrate every corner of human society, Harari argued that it’s not merely a tool but an unprecedented force capable of redefining our shared beliefs, values and societal structures. The historian, renowned for works like Sapiens and Homo Deus, talked about how AI challenges democracy, influences collective narratives and ultimately determines the fabric of our world.

One of Harari’s primary concerns is AI’s role in controlling information and, subsequently, the narratives that shape our understanding of reality.

“For the first time in history, it’s nonhumans controlling the conversation,” he stated, pointing out that while humans historically curated knowledge, algorithms now shape what we see, read, and believe. Unlike human editors, these algorithms don’t adhere to ethical standards but instead prioritize engagement, frequently amplifying the most sensational content. This shift, Harari suggested, poses a unique challenge to democracy itself, as it undermines the individual’s ability to discern objective reality.

Discussing the news industry, Harari observed that one of the first jobs AI “automated” was that of news editors. Previously, editors would choose what stories made headlines based on societal relevance and newsworthiness. Today, algorithms on platforms like Facebook and TikTok dictate what millions of people see, he explained, based on engagement metrics rather than public interest.

“Who decides what will be at the top of the Facebook Newsfeed?” Harari asked. “It’s not a human being. An algorithm decides what people’s attention will be focused on.”

This algorithmic gatekeeping goes beyond just prioritizing stories. According to Harari, it fosters a world in which truth and fiction blur, leaving people susceptible to believing misinformation. The historian sees this as part of a broader crisis of truth, where collective narratives are shaped not by objective reality but by patterns of digital engagement.

AI’s influence extends far beyond information control; it has the unique potential to simulate emotional bonds, fostering a new level of intimacy with users. Harari cautioned that AI could generate personalized content and responses that make people feel seen, heard, and understood — without actually possessing consciousness or empathy.

“Imagine a world flooded by millions, even billions, of highly intelligent nonhuman agents that are very good at faking intimacy,” he remarked, expressing concern over the potential for such technologies to manipulate emotions on a massive scale. This capability could allow companies, governments, or interest groups to sway public opinion by exploiting deeply personal psychological and emotional insights.

Ultimately, Harari urges caution, underlining that AI has the power to redefine the very fabric of social trust and collective memory. With the rise of AI-generated realities, he believes that societies must critically examine and regulate how this technology is deployed to prevent the erosion of democratic values. He stressed: “The real danger is from the AI bureaucrats…already making decisions about our lives.”

In his closing thoughts, Harari proposed an international organization to monitor and inform the public about AI advancements, independent of governments or corporations. He believes such transparency is vital to ensure AI remains a force for good. While AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, climate science, and education, Harari warns that without proper checks, it could just as easily lead humanity into a world where belief, not truth, defines our reality.

As Harari sees it, the questions posed by AI are fundamental, and our answers will determine the future of human society.
