Peter Kyle on AI’s Potential: “Nobody Will Be Left Behind”

In a candid discussion with Sky’s Sophy Ridge, UK Science Secretary Peter Kyle addressed concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs, the economy and public services. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Kyle struck an optimistic tone about AI’s potential to reshape society and the government’s responsibility to guide this transition.

“AI is going to transform society and our economy profoundly,” Kyle remarked, comparing its impact to that of electricity during its introduction. He underlined the dual responsibility of building the infrastructure necessary for AI’s success while ensuring equitable benefits. “We need to make sure that it has equity baked in at the outset… no community is ever left behind.”

Kyle acknowledged public apprehension about job displacement but argued that AI would enhance job satisfaction by automating repetitive tasks.

“The majority experience will be that jobs will become more satisfying because mundane tasks will become routinized by AI,” he said, adding, “Yes, there will be displacement but the economy and jobs adapt over time.”

The minister outlined the government’s proactive approach, including the establishment of an AI Energy Council and a focus on renewable energy solutions.

“AI is going to help us distribute electricity more efficiently and conserve energy in households,” Kyle explained. However, he admitted that managing AI’s energy demands will require careful planning: “If we get it right, the opportunities our country would face would be absolutely endless.”

Kyle stressed that the government’s role extends beyond infrastructure, committing to long-term educational and skill-building initiatives.

“We will not allow communities to be abandoned as they were in the 1980s,” he asserted. Instead, the government will focus on lifelong learning and supporting communities through AI-driven change.

As AI reshapes the UK’s economic and social landscape, Kyle remains adamant: “I am not going to stand on the sidelines. We have a responsibility to make this work for everyone.”
