Alexandr Wang on the AI Race with China

The battle for AI supremacy between the U.S. and China is closer than most Americans think, according to Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. Despite years of U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence, China is closing the gap — and in some areas, it has already caught up.

“The AI race and the AI war between the U.S. and China, I think, is one of the most important issues of today,” Wang warned during an interview at Davos this year.

Scale AI, the company Wang founded, plays a pivotal role in training AI models by providing high-quality labeled data. As the AI arms race accelerates, he argues that the U.S. must take bold action to maintain its lead.

“We need to unleash U.S. energy to enable this AI boom,” he stated, stressing that computational infrastructure is now just as critical as raw data or algorithms.

A major development in this global competition came recently when China’s DeepSeek AI lab released a model that performed on par with America’s best — or as many have been saying — even better.

“I think it is symbolic that the Chinese lab releases an earth-shattering model on Christmas Day when the rest of us are sort of celebrating the holiday,” Wang noted. This event underscored China’s relentless pursuit of AI advancement and the urgency for the U.S. to accelerate its own efforts.

While the U.S. still benefits from access to NVIDIA’s cutting-edge chips, Wang revealed that China possesses far more AI hardware than most assume.

“My understanding is that DeepSeek has about 50,000 A100s, which they can’t talk about obviously, because it is against the export controls that the United States has put in place,” he disclosed. This revelation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current U.S. policies aimed at restricting China’s AI capabilities.

Despite these challenges, Wang remains optimistic about America’s ability to stay ahead — if the country fully commits to investing in AI infrastructure, research, and talent. The AI boom is not just about competition; it’s about securing the future of technology and ensuring the U.S. remains the global leader in artificial intelligence.
