Scale AI has announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to develop “Thunderforge,” an AI-powered system designed to enhance military planning and operations. Awarded through a prototype contract, Thunderforge will integrate AI agents to support modeling, simulation, decision-making, and automated workflows, with initial deployment at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. European Command before expanding further.
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), leading the initiative, emphasized that Thunderforge will accelerate decision-making and AI-powered wargaming to strengthen U.S. defense capabilities. Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang stated that the technology will modernize military operations by increasing speed and efficiency, ensuring that the U.S. maintains a strategic advantage.
The program brings together multiple technology partners, including Anduril and Microsoft, to develop AI-driven defense solutions. While Scale AI highlighted that the system will operate under human oversight, DIU did not emphasize this aspect in its official statements. DIU Director Doug Beck underscored the need for “machine speed” in modern warfare, while Bryce Goodman, DIU Thunderforge Program Lead, noted that current response times are mismatched with the pace of military threats.
Scale AI’s contract reflects a broader shift in the tech industry’s engagement with military applications. Major AI firms, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Palantir, have recently entered defense partnerships, signaling a departure from previous bans on military use. While these collaborations focus on AI-driven intelligence, concerns remain over ethical implications, oversight, and the potential for AI systems to be used in ways that extend beyond their intended scope.
