AI Is Rewriting the Startup Playbook Says VC Jeff Bussgang

If you’re launching a startup today, artificial intelligence isn’t just a tool — it’s a competitive necessity. Jeff Bussgang, Harvard Business School professor, venture capitalist at Flybridge, and author of The Experimentation Machine, believes the startup landscape is undergoing a fundamental shift — and AI is at the core.

“The AI all of us are using in this moment is the worst AI we will ever see,” Bussgang said during a recent interview on the AI First podcast. “Founders who use AI are absolutely going to replace founders who don’t use AI.” It’s a bold, even urgent call to action — and one that reflects the massive acceleration AI is driving in entrepreneurship.

In The Experimentation Machine, Bussgang outlines how AI is transforming every step of the founder journey, from ideation to product-market fit. He’s not just talking about building AI-native products. He’s focused on how all founders — whether they’re creating an app, launching a CPG brand, or reinventing healthcare — can wield AI as a force multiplier.

Bussgang’s students at HBS now use ChatGPT to generate startup ideas as their very first assignment. He teaches them to prompt smarter, iterate faster, and test hypotheses more aggressively — all using AI as a co-pilot. It’s part of his broader thesis: AI collapses the time and resources required to get from zero to one.

Through examples like Topline Pro, a YC startup serving service professionals with AI-generated websites and CRM tools, Bussgang shows how AI enables scalable, low-cost customer acquisition and support — historically one of the hardest challenges for small businesses.

Startups, he argues, now have access to superpowers once reserved for much larger companies. But with that power comes pressure: iterate faster, learn smarter, and build with AI — or risk falling behind in a game that’s already changed.
