Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of AI at Microsoft, has said the company is deliberately choosing not to chase the most cutting-edge artificial intelligence models, instead focusing on more cost-effective, use-case-driven approaches. In an interview with CNBC’s Steve Kovach, Suleyman described Microsoft’s “off-frontier” strategy as a way to benefit from AI breakthroughs without incurring the high costs of leading the race.
Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind and joined Microsoft via Inflection, emphasized the importance of balancing ambition with sustainability. Speaking during Microsoft’s 50th anniversary at its Redmond HQ, he said long-term AI self-sufficiency is essential, even as Microsoft remains closely tied to OpenAI, despite growing competition.
