Amazon is reportedly pausing portions of its international data center leasing activity as part of a broader reassessment of infrastructure planning across the cloud industry. According to a research note from Wells Fargo, the move reflects a more cautious approach toward large-scale leasing, particularly in response to evolving return expectations from recent AI investments.
While Amazon has not canceled any existing agreements, it is tightening pre-lease windows for capacity scheduled before 2026. Kevin Miller, Vice President of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Global Data Centers, stated that the shift represents “routine capacity management” and not a change in long-term strategy. The move aligns with a broader trend as cloud giants balance growth with more deliberate capital deployment amid rising costs and economic uncertainty.
