Tamay Besiroglu, a well-known AI researcher and founder of the nonprofit Epoch, has launched a new startup, Mechanize, with an audacious mission: to automate all human labor through advanced AI agents. Announced on X, Mechanize aims to develop the data, tools, and environments needed to replace virtually every job — starting with white-collar work — with AI.
Besiroglu said the company’s goal is to unlock “full automation of the economy,” describing the total addressable market as the global wage pool: an estimated $60 trillion. While the startup has faced backlash for its implications and ties to the research institute Epoch, Besiroglu insists the outcome could be “vast abundance” and higher living standards. Mechanize is backed by investors including Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Jeff Dean.
