Wikipedia Editors and Volunteers Gain New Tools Through Wikimedia Human-Centered AI Initiative

The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia, has announced a three-year artificial intelligence strategy focused on supporting its global community of human editors rather than replacing them. In a move that underscores its commitment to human-centered technology, the foundation plans to deploy AI to streamline editing workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and improve information discoverability — enhancing how contributors collaborate, not eliminating their role.

The strategy will use generative AI to simplify translation, improve new volunteer onboarding, and assist in moderation, all while upholding core principles like transparency, open-source development, and multilingual access. Leaders at the foundation emphasized that AI will serve as a tool to amplify human agency, not substitute it.
