Drone Shows Gain Ground as Eco-Friendly Alternative to Fourth of July Fireworks

Insider Brief

  • Communities across the U.S. are increasingly replacing or supplementing traditional Fourth of July fireworks with drone shows, citing environmental concerns, noise sensitivity, and public safety.
  • Cities like Pasadena, Culver City, and Cocoa Beach are embracing drone-only displays, with officials highlighting reduced air and noise pollution, broader visibility, and lower cleanup costs.
  • Drone shows range from $15,000 to $100,000, with mid-sized events averaging $40,000, and are gaining support from local leaders, veterans groups, and sustainability advocates as a more inclusive and resilient celebration option.

There are few things tied to the Fourth of July as fireworks, but now drone shows are becoming a popular way to celebrate. While many communities and venues have added these high-tech displays, using synchronized drones to create vibrant patterns in the sky, to their Independence Day celebrations along with traditional fireworks, drone-only celebrations are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.

Why Drone Shows?

Drone shows are gaining traction because they are seen as more eco-friendly, safer, quieter and inclusive for pets and noise-sensitive individuals.

“Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows reduce noise and air pollution while still delivering an unforgettable experience,” Milwaukee County Parks Executive Director Guy Smith said in a press release announcing the Wsconsin community’s new celebration, which was held July 3.

In California, recent wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton blazes, have heightened public concern and accelerated the shift toward safer alternatives. The Rose Bow’s nearly century old celebration in Pasadena will not feature any fireworks for the first time ever. The growing popularity of drone shows in California is fueled by increasing awareness of the environmental and safety risks linked to fireworks, according to Los Angeles Magazine.

Culver City will host the return of the Downtown Culver City Independence Celebration on Saturday, July 5.. This free, family-friendly event welcomes residents and visitors for an evening of live entertainment, patriotic tributes, and an aerial drone light show in the heart of downtown.

“Now in its second year, the event continues a new and sustainable tradition for Culver City, replacing the former fireworks display with a safe and environmentally friendly drone show,” the cty’s website noted.

In Lawrence, Kansas, not only was the environment taken into considertion, but so was the noise that goes along with traditional fireworks.

“It’s both environmentally friendly; it’s gentler for everybody, because we also think about veterans that may have trauma issues,” said Porter Arneill, assistant director of Lawrence parks and recreation, told KMBC. “So, from that perspective, we have a dedication to sustainability in our city.”

For officials in Cocoa Beach, Fla., debris cleanup from its beaches was one reason the community, which is also celebrating its centenial, opted to switch to drones.

“It’s comparable in price. It’s viewed from a much larger area. You can have a much more robust show, and we thought it would be a little bit different,” Cocoa Beach City Manager Wayne Carragino told WESH.

According to Sky Elements, a leading company in the industry, the proce range for drone shows range between $15,000 to $100,000, with medium-sized shows about $40,000.
