IBM CEO Arvind Krishna Urges Increase in Federal AI R&D Funding Amid Proposed Budget Cuts

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna is calling for expanded federal investment in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, warning that current budget cuts risk undermining U.S. innovation and competitiveness. Speaking in an interview with TechCrunch, Krishna said IBM has consistently advocated for increased government funding for AI-related research and development, a position he described as “unequivocal.”

Krishna’s comments come as the Trump administration’s proposed FY2026 budget seeks to drastically reduce funding for agencies such as the National Science Foundation, threatening billions in AI R&D grants. IBM, which recently saw $100 million in canceled federal contracts, remains optimistic. Krishna stated he expects AI, quantum, and semiconductor R&D support to recover and grow within the year.
