Thomson Reuters Launches Agentic AI Systems, Redefining Professional Workflows with CoCounsel for Tax, Audit, and Accounting

Thomson Reuters (TSX/Nasdaq: TRI) has announced the official launch of CoCounsel, a next-generation agentic AI system designed for tax, audit, and accounting professionals. Representing the company’s most advanced AI deployment to date, CoCounsel moves beyond traditional prompt-based tools by performing autonomous, multi-step tasks with embedded reasoning, transparency, and human oversight.

David Wong, Chief Product Officer at Thomson Reuters, called agentic AI “a re-architecture, not just a rebrand,” saying its ability to operate inside real workflows and escalate intelligently. CoCounsel, built using trusted sources like Checkpoint and IRS code, was developed in part through the acquisition of Materia, led by Kevin Merlini.

This milestone signals a company-wide shift, with future AI agents coming to Westlaw, Practical Law, and GoSystem Tax, all underpinned by enterprise-grade infrastructure and models from partners including OpenAI.
