Meta Courts Safe Superintelligence Leadership to Supercharge AI Push

Meta Platforms accelerated its quest to build super-intelligent AI after a rejected $32 billion bid for Safe Superintelligence (SSI). CNBC reported that Ilya Sutskever turned down the offer; Meta is now in advanced talks to recruit SSI co-founder and CEO Daniel Gross and former GitHub chief Nat Friedman to steer its Superintelligence Lab, and will take a minority stake in their fund NFDG, backer of Perplexity and Character.AI.

The move follows the arrival of Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang earlier this month. Gross and Friedman are expected to focus on frontier-model safety and multimodal reasoning. A Meta spokesperson said Mark Zuckerberg is assembling “the brightest minds to deliver safe, transformative intelligence for billions.”
