Cursor Accelerates Enterprise AI Push with Strategic Talent Acquisition from Koala

Anysphere, the company behind viral AI coding app Cursor, is intensifying its competition with Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot by acquiring top engineering talent from Koala, an AI-powered CRM startup. As part of the deal, several of Koala’s senior engineers will join Cursor to form a dedicated enterprise-readiness team. Koala, which raised a $15 million Series A earlier this year, is set to shut down in September.

Founded by Daksh Gupta, Cursor emerged from Y Combinator in 2024 and has quickly positioned itself as a serious challenger in the AI development tools market. Backed by rapid growth, Cursor reported $500 million in ARR in June and now works with over half of the Fortune 500, including Nvidia, Adobe, and Uber.

The move reflects Cursor’s broader strategy of absorbing specialized talent from struggling AI startups to rapidly scale its enterprise offering. The company has also hired Travis McPeak, former CEO of Resourcely, to lead its security division.

As demand surges for AI tools that enhance developer productivity, Cursor is expanding its sales and go-to-market teams, building out a full-stack AI IDE that competes directly with GitHub Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude Code. With enterprise adoption rising and AI development agents gaining traction, Cursor’s ability to scale may determine its place among the leaders shaping the future of AI coding platforms.
