Elon Musk’s xAI has released the model weights for Grok 2.5, making the older version of its AI system available on Hugging Face. Musk confirmed that Grok 2.5, which was the company’s leading model last year, is now open source and added that Grok 3 will follow in approximately six months.
The move highlights xAI’s push toward greater openness in the AI ecosystem, though some experts, including AI engineer Tim Kellogg, noted the license terms carry anti-competitive restrictions.
Grok, integrated into X after its merger with xAI, has drawn scrutiny for controversial outputs earlier this year, prompting the company to release its system prompts on GitHub. Musk has since positioned Grok 4 as a maximally truth-seeking model, though its reliance on Musk’s own social media presence continues to generate debate.
