Farang Announces €1.5M in Funding to Advance AI-Native Architecture Beyond Transformers

Swedish AI research lab Farang has secured €1.5 million in Seed funding to scale its proof-of-concept models and expand compute resources for training and fine-tuning next-generation foundational large language models. The round was led by Voima Ventures and the Amadeus APEX Technology Fund, with participation from prominent angel investors including Tero Ojanpera, Co-founder of Silo AI, and former Klevu founders Nilay Oza and Niraj Aswani.

Founded in 2025, Farang has developed a novel AI architecture positioned as a competitor to the Transformer models powering ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The company, led by Founder and CEO Emil Romanus, claims its design can produce specialised AI assistants in fields such as programming and medicine while consuming up to twenty-five times fewer computational resources. Romanus highlighted that Farang’s system internally “thinks” before generating responses, offering greater coherence and efficiency.

Inka Mero, Managing Partner at Voima Ventures, described the breakthrough as a paradigm shift for Europe’s AI ecosystem, while Ion Hauer, Principal at APEX Ventures, said Farang represents a foundational leap that could redefine entire sectors.

With the new funding, Farang plans to target high-value niches including programming assistants for specific frameworks like React and medical AI applications, while enabling enterprises to deploy models privately on their own infrastructure. The company aims to prove its approach in specialised domains before expanding to challenge today’s market leaders in general-purpose AI.
