OpenAI has signed agreements with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to supply high-bandwidth memory chips and build AI data centers in South Korea as part of its $500 billion Stargate infrastructure initiative with Oracle and SoftBank. The letters of intent were finalized in Seoul following a meeting between Sam Altman, President Lee Jae-myung, Jay Y. Lee, and Chey Tae-won.
The deal calls for Samsung and SK Hynix to manufacture up to 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly, more than doubling global capacity, to support Stargate’s compute requirements. Both conglomerates will also integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI APIs across their operations. The agreements underscore OpenAI’s aggressive push to secure compute dominance amid surging investment in AI infrastructure worldwide.
