OpenAI has introduced a major update to ChatGPT, making its voice capabilities available directly within standard chat conversations for the first time. The new interface removes the need to switch into a separate voice mode, allowing users to speak with ChatGPT while simultaneously viewing text responses, past messages, and shared visuals such as images and maps.
Previously, voice interactions occurred on a standalone screen featuring an animated prompt and limited visibility into the conversation’s text history. The redesign brings speech and text together in one view, creating a more natural and flexible way to engage with the AI. Users can now talk, watch responses appear in real time, and reference earlier parts of the conversation without leaving the session.
The integrated voice experience is rolling out as the default on web and mobile, though users who prefer the older interface can restore the original layout through the Voice Mode settings by enabling “Separate mode.”
