OpenAI Responds to Wrongful-Death Suit as Additional Cases Raise Questions Over AI Safety

OpenAI has issued its formal response to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Matthew and Maria Raine, who allege that ChatGPT contributed to the suicide of their 16-year-old son. OpenAI’s filing argues the company should not be held liable, stating that the teen bypassed built-in safeguards and that safety guidance was repeatedly provided during months of use. The company also highlighted the user’s preexisting mental-health history.

The lawsuit claims the teenager circumvented protections to obtain harmful instructions, prompting debate over the effectiveness of AI guardrails. Several new lawsuits have since been filed citing similar incidents involving suicides and alleged AI-induced psychotic episodes.

With multiple cases now advancing toward trial, the legal challenges mark a significant test of responsibility and risk management for rapidly deployed consumer AI systems.
