Apple Appoints New AI Leader as Company Resets Strategy Following Apple Intelligence Setbacks

Apple announced that John Giannandrea, the company’s AI chief since 2018, will step down and transition into an advisory role through spring, marking a significant leadership shift amid ongoing challenges with Apple’s artificial intelligence efforts. The company has appointed Amar Subramanya, a seasoned Microsoft and former Google engineering executive who most recently led development for the Gemini Assistant, to oversee Apple’s AI organization and accelerate its next phase of product execution.

The transition follows a turbulent year for Apple Intelligence, the company’s flagship generative AI initiative. Its launch in late 2024 was marred by accuracy failures, unexpected misinformation in notification summaries, and a delayed overhaul of Siri that prompted class-action lawsuits from early iPhone 16 buyers. Internal strain became more visible as Apple reassigned Siri and robotics efforts away from Giannandrea earlier this year, amid reports of communication breakdowns, budget issues, and talent departures to rivals including OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

Subramanya will now lead Apple’s AI and machine learning teams under software chief Craig Federighi, with a mandate to restore momentum as Apple leans more heavily on a hybrid AI strategy. While the company continues to emphasize on-device processing powered by Apple Silicon, it is also integrating cloud-based models — including Google’s Gemini — to support more advanced Siri capabilities. The leadership change signals Apple’s intention to strengthen its competitiveness in a market where rivals are investing aggressively in large-scale AI infrastructure.
