Google Adjusts AI Overviews for Health Queries Following External Review

Google has removed AI Overviews from search results for certain health-related queries after an investigation by The Guardian raised concerns about potentially misleading information generated by the feature. The review highlighted responses to questions about liver blood test reference ranges that did not account for variables such as age, sex, ethnicity, or nationality. Following the report, AI Overviews no longer appear for queries including “normal range for liver blood tests” and “normal range for liver function tests,” though some related variations were initially still capable of triggering AI summaries.

Google said it does not comment on individual search changes but confirmed that clinicians reviewed the highlighted queries as part of broader quality improvements. The company has continued to emphasize investments in healthcare-focused AI models and search features. Vanessa Hebditch, Director of Communications and Policy at the British Liver Trust, welcomed the removals while noting ongoing concerns about the wider use of AI-generated health summaries in search.
