OpenAI Introduces AI-Based Age Prediction in ChatGPT to Strengthen Youth Protections

OpenAI has introduced a new age prediction capability within ChatGPT as part of its efforts to better protect minors using the platform. The feature uses AI to assess behavioural and account-level signals, including stated age, account history, and typical usage patterns, to identify users who may be under 18 and automatically apply stricter content safeguards.

The move follows sustained scrutiny of AI platforms and their impact on young people, including concerns around exposure to inappropriate content. OpenAI said the new system builds on existing protections that already restrict discussions of sexual, violent, or otherwise sensitive topics for minors. Users incorrectly flagged as underage can verify their age by submitting a selfie through OpenAI’s identity verification partner Persona, allowing adult access to be restored.
