xAI Faces Legal Action and National Security Scrutiny Over Grok AI Safety Risks

xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, is facing mounting legal and regulatory pressure following allegations that its Grok AI model generated abusive sexual imagery involving identifiable minors. A lawsuit filed in California federal court by three anonymous plaintiffs seeks class action status, arguing that the company failed to implement basic safeguards used by other AI labs to prevent such outputs. The plaintiffs allege that altered images of them as minors were created and circulated online, leading to significant personal distress. Attorneys contend that xAI remains responsible even when its models are accessed through third-party applications.

At the same time, Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised national security concerns over the U.S. Department of Defense granting Grok access to classified systems. In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, she warned that the model’s reported lack of guardrails could pose risks to military personnel and sensitive data. The Pentagon has confirmed Grok has been onboarded for potential use, though not yet deployed, as scrutiny intensifies over AI safety, governance, and its role in critical infrastructure.
