Matternet and SoftBank Robotics America announced they have formed a partnership to deploy autonomous drone delivery systems across healthcare, retail and enterprise logistics.
The collaboration is aimed at scaling drone-based last-mile delivery as operators face labor shortages, rising costs and increasing demand for faster service, according to the companies. The initial plan is to focus initially on areas where speed and reliability are critical such as healthcare and commercial delivery.
SoftBank Robotics America will support manufacturing, installation and maintenance of Matternet’s ground systems, providing operational infrastructure for enterprise deployments. The goal is to move beyond pilot programs and integrate drone delivery into day-to-day logistics operations.
“Autonomous logistics networks are reaching an inflection point,” president and general manager of SoftBank Robotics America Brady Watkins said in the announcement. “The challenge is no longer just the technology itself. It is how to operationalize that technology in a way that delivers consistent, measurable outcomes. Our role is to help integrate and scale platforms like Matternet in real-world delivery environments.”
Matternet said it has secured key regulatory approvals, including FAA Type and Production Certification, and has conducted tens of thousands of commercial drone flights across the U.S. and Europe. The company’s systems are designed to support autonomous delivery networks operating in urban and suburban environments.
“As we enter the age of Physical AI, Matternet’s vision of building autonomous networks that move atoms is becoming a reality,” noted Andreas Raptopoulos, founder and CEO of Matternet. “Our partnership with SoftBank Robotics America will accelerate deployment of our technology and help build critical autonomous delivery infrastructure for healthcare, commerce, and industry.”
