Zebra Technologies Makes Strategic Investment in Apera AI

Insider Brief

  • Zebra Ventures made a strategic investment in Apera AI to support AI-driven automation in manufacturing and logistics, with financial terms undisclosed.
  • Apera AI’s 4D Vision system gives industrial robots real-time visual intelligence to identify, locate and handle complex parts such as clear, reflective or overlapping components in dynamic factory environments with changing lighting and shifting bins.
  • Zebra Technologies said the investment supports its broader Connected Factory strategy following its 2025 acquisition of Photoneo, while Apera said the funding will help scale faster deployment of vision-guided robotics across manufacturing operations.

Zebra Technologies announced a strategic investment in robotics 4D vision developer Apera AI through its corporate venture capital arm Zebra Ventures to further expand into AI-driven automation for manufacturing and logistics.

Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Apera AI develops what it calls a 4D Vision system for industrial robots, designed to help robots identify, locate and manipulate complex parts in real time under changing factory conditions. According to the company, the system uses stereo vision and AI models to allow robots to work more reliably in environments where lighting shifts, bins move, grippers wear down or parts overlap in ways that make traditional machine vision difficult.

That includes handling clear, reflective or irregularly stacked parts, which are often difficult for standard robotic picking systems to process consistently.

“Our investment in Apera AI is a strategic step toward a more intelligent, responsive automation future,” Zebra Ventures vice president Tony Palchecksaid in a statement. “We are committed to helping organizations reach new levels of performance through automated workflows, and Apera AI offers a powerful new approach which we are excited to support through our venture investment.”

The company says its software is built for unstructured, high-speed production lines where flexibility and fast deployment matter more than rigid pre-programmed workflows.

Rather than requiring extensive calibration or tightly controlled environments, Apera’s platform is designed to adapt to real-world variability, helping manufacturers reduce engineering time and speed up deployment.

Zebra said the investment aligns with its broader strategy around connected factory operations, where AI, machine vision and automation are used to improve visibility, quality control and workflow efficiency across industrial environments.

The company has been expanding that effort through both internal development and acquisitions, including its 2025 purchase of Photoneo, a provider of 3D-based imaging systems.

Zebra touts those technologies as part of its Connected Factory framework that focuses on automation and real-time operational visibility across manufacturing and supply chain environments.

For Apera AI, the investment is expected to support broader deployment with manufacturers looking for faster rollout of vision-guided robotic systems, particularly in operations where production conditions change frequently and downtime carries high cost, according to Zebra.

The company says its systems are already used by automotive manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers and other industrial operators seeking to improve robotic throughput and reduce manual intervention on plant floors.

“Zebra Ventures’ support marks a major milestone for Apera AI,” noted Sina Afrooze, co-founder and CEO of Apera AI. “We’re proud to play a role in the future of industrial automation powered by AI and vision-driven intelligence. We look forward to helping manufacturers standardize on vision-guided robotics faster, scale throughput, and protect uptime across their plant floors.”
