OpenAI has integrated its Codex AI coding agent into the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android, allowing developers to monitor live environments, review outputs, approve commands, and manage workflows remotely. The update, currently in preview, follows Codex gaining background desktop capabilities last month and a Chrome extension earlier this month — part of a rapid expansion of the tool’s reach across platforms.
The announcement arrives as OpenAI navigates a deteriorating relationship with Apple. According to reports, OpenAI has engaged outside legal counsel to explore options including a formal breach-of-contract notice, after its ChatGPTintegration into Siri and Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature failed to generate the subscriber growth and visibility the company anticipated. Apple has its own grievances, citing concerns over OpenAI’s privacy standards and its push into hardware led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Apple has since struck a separate AI infrastructure deal with Google, paying approximately $1 billion annually to power Apple Intelligence with Gemini models.
On the coding front, OpenAI’s Codex expansion is a direct response to competitive pressure from Anthropic, whose Claude Code has grown significantly in popularity among developers and businesses. Anthropic launched a comparable mobile monitoring feature earlier this year.
