Insider Brief
- OpenAI is expanding its robotics efforts and hiring engineers across hardware, machine learning, systems and operations as it develops robots designed to operate in the physical world.
- CEO Sam Altman said the company’s near-term focus is on robots that support skilled workers building infrastructure, while its longer-term vision includes personal robots capable of assisting people with everyday tasks.
- Altman said OpenAI’s robotics program has grown out of its world simulation research and is now a dedicated initiative led by Aditya Ramesh that combines robotics hardware development with machine learning research.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company’s robotics effort is actively hiring engineers across hardware, machine learning, systems and operations as it works to develop robots capable of operating in the physical world.
“AI should be able to help people in the physical world. In the short term, we are focused on robots to support skilled workers to build our future infrastructure; in the long term, we imagine everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need,” Altman wrote in a post on X.
According to Altman, OpenAI’s robotics program has evolved from the company’s world simulation research efforts over the past year into a dedicated robotics initiative, OpenAI Robotics, led by Aditya Ramesh. He said the work combines robotics hardware development with machine learning research.
The company is recruiting engineers with experience across the robotics stack as it expands its robotics development efforts.
“We’ve created a really unique environment to execute on the scope and ambitions of our program,” Ramesh posted to X. “If you’re passionate about working full-stack on robotics, please building with us!”
