Silicon Valley startup Humane, co-founded by former Apple executives and supported by Microsoft and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, unveiled its innovative AI device, the Ai Pin, priced at $699. Launching on November 16 in the US, this unique gadget is meant to be worn on clothing and serves as a gateway to advanced artificial intelligence (AI). Unlike the mixed-reality headsets pursued by companies like Apple and Meta Platforms, the Ai Pin focuses on a non-traditional approach, eliminating the need for a conventional screen. It interacts with users primarily through AI, projecting text and monochrome images onto the user’s hand using a laser system.
During an earlier demonstration of the Ai Pin, Imran Chaudhri, the co-founder and President of Humane, stated that “the future is not on your face.”
The Ai Pin’s collaboration with OpenAI, known for creating ChatGPT, and Microsoft’s cloud computing, enables a virtual assistant to mimic the user’s speaking style to compose messages and summarize complex email threads with its “Catch Me Up” feature. Additionally, it houses a camera for taking photos and employing computer vision to analyze and provide information like nutritional estimates of canned food items. Humane, which has raised $241 million in funding, believes that the future of tech wearables lies in seamless AI integration rather than wearable screens, emphasizing a user-friendly experience that harnesses the power of AI for everyday tasks.
“Ai Pin is the embodiment of our vision to integrate AI into the fabric of daily life, enhancing our capabilities without overshadowing our humanity,” said Chaudhri in a recent statement about his company’s device.
