In an era where school safety has become a paramount concern due to the increasing incidents of school shootings, San Jose-based Iterate.ai is stepping forward with an innovative solution. The company, originally focused on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for retail theft prevention, has pivoted its expertise towards safeguarding schools. By offering their weapon detection technology for free to educational institutions, they aim to make school environments safer.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Matt Frary of Iterate.ai, motivated by a personal drive to protect students, including his own children, emphasized the urgency and importance of their mission.
“Why don’t we protect our kids, I was thinking of my kids specifically, and you know, first and foremost, why don’t we figure out how to protect our kids, use this technology so that we can implement it quickly and cheaper and faster, so that we can proliferate it out there,” Frary began. “And let’s just do the right thing. If we’re going to protect our kids, let’s protect all kids.” This sentiment underpins the company’s decision to make their technology widely accessible.
The AI technology developed by Iterate.ai can detect guns using existing security cameras in schools and alert law enforcement within seconds of identification. This rapid response capability is critical in mitigating the potential impact of a threat on school premises. With 16 school shootings reported in the U.S. so far this year, the need for such preventive measures is more pressing than ever.
Iterate.ai’s initiative represents a significant step forward in using technology to create safer learning environments. By leveraging AI for good, they embody the potential of technological innovation to address some of society’s most challenging issues.
